We need 3 more escorts to help during the Regional Spelling be on March 20 from 9 am to 1. Please email Lynn or Patty if you can help out. Here is a job description for those interested. It is a lot of fun and a good way to support our younger community.
Escorts
Between three and five escorts will be located backstage in the auditorium. As a participant misspells, the escort will take a medal and an NIC events pass from the prize table next to them and walk out to the child that has just misspelled. Then they will escort them back to their families in the audience.
The job is necessary because we have children as young as fourth graders who will be upset when they misspell. This turns a negative into a positive when you go up there and tell them good job and present them with their medal. Then you'll walk out of the green room backstage and around to the auditorium doors where you'll pause until applause takes place and then the ushers will let you take them to their parents. You’ll finish the loop by coming back up on stage. The spelling bee coordinator will demonstrate the route the morning of the bee.
There's not much to it, but it's an important job! Since at some points in the bee participants will be eliminated sometimes every word, you'll be busy, which is why you'll rotate through with the other volunteers. Please don’t wear jeans. Anything else, even khakis, is fine. And remember, you’ll be on your feet almost the entire time, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes!When there are only four spellers left, your job will change a little. You’ll keep the fourth place winner and the third place winner backstage for the awards ceremony portion of the event. The top two spellers will have a spell off at the end of the bee and when a champion has been declared, you’ll go out and get the second place winner. The confetti cannons will go off and then you’ll go get the champion and bring them backstage as well. The awards ceremony will begin then.
